Street Fighter 2 Animated finally getting a valid HQ US release!

Post by class316 » June 20th, 2016, 8:44 pm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fi ... ated_Movie

This is a Japanese anime released in 1994 and based off of the revolutionary video game Street Fighter 2.

It had lots and lots of VHS and DVD releases throughout the world. Despite that, the majority of releases were either invalid, not good quality, or both.

For instance, there's a scene where Chun Li showers and you see her breasts. That scene was taken out of most releases outside of Japan. Some releases would be cropped pan and scan and not widescreen. Some releases did not have the full Japanese credits. Even in the age of DVDs, widescreeen releases were not anamorphic. Some releases included the English dub ONLY and did not include the original Japanese audio. Some releases had no English subtitles or had non removable English subtitles. And so on and so forth

Then there was the issue of the English dub. Most none of the releases included the uncensored English dub. Words like fuck were taken out.

Not surprisingly, SF2 animated caused a lot of grief, pain, and misery to both film and anime buffs over the years.

It was not until as late as 2006 the US finally saw a valid DVD release of this

This release has

FULL UNCUT (as the cover states) Widescreen Video (boobs, credits, and all for the first time on a non Japanese DVD)
Original Japanese audio
Removable English subtitles

The faults were:

it was not anamorphic widescreen
The English dub was the censored one

Then in 2013 Europe saw an HD release! This is the KAZE UK release

This release has

FULL UNCUT HD REMASTERED Widescreen Video (as the cover states)
Original Japanese audio
Removable English subtitles

However, even for that release the "uncensored" did not apply to the English dub

But now a company called Discotek Media is working on a definite release that addresses all grievances people had due to both invalidity and quality.

This is a trailer they released for their upcoming blu ray

This is the menus they released showcasing all the options!

You even have the option to display English subs with the English names and the Japanese names! Wow just wow!

Also, these are statements they made via twitter, and I quote:
Street Fighter movie coming in September/October
Some of the extras on the Street Fighter: The Movie release include test animations made specifically for animators.
A documentary, made by @discotekmedia is included on the disk with @MichaelToole narration talking about the complications of the release.
So @discotekmedia included all audio even one with English dialogue and Japanese soundtrack never done before.
And finally, this was said on another forum by someone who is working on this, and my favorite statement of all. And I quote
EVERY BIT of the main movie on the disc is completely intact. No snipped footage. It's all there. Every scene, every shot. Japanese end credit roll, Sagat standing in Shadowlaw HQ, extra seconds of Ryu and Fei Long walking...all that stuff, dude. Nothing missing.
Can't wait for this blu ray release!

This thing has become such an important part of my life: https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5339/3088 ... 925b_k.jpg

I've been wanting this for 20 years now!

I would say this is the most perfectly executed blu ray ever! This release should reserve as an example of how any release should be treated. They truly outdid themselves.

First of all they took the original 110% uncut footage and made a whole new 1080p transfer. Every ounce of footage is there. Every drop of violence and blood, every bit of nudity, every Japanese credit, right up to the post credit snippet where they advertise the "upcoming" 1995 release of the Van Dam SF2 movie!

And to quote them on twitter:
EVERY BIT of the main movie on the disc is completely intact. No snipped footage. It's all there. Every scene, every shot. Japanese end credit roll, Sagat standing in Shadowlaw HQ, extra seconds of Ryu and Fei Long walking...all that stuff, dude. Nothing missing.
Because of this, NO English dub actually matched the footage, so they painfully synched THREE existing English tracks to the uncut footage! US Unrated, UK unrated (the one with the most profanity), and the PG-13 dub. They of course include the original Japanese audio track so you can watch it as intended audio wise.

But no, they did not stop there. They made another audio track that never existed ! They made yet another track with English dub and Japanese soundtrack. Additionally, the English dub does not match any of the others as they took elements from each one that they believed fit the Japanese music. Wow just wow!

Subtitles were freshly translated, and they even gave the option to have subs with original Japanese names for the 3 bosses or with the English names (personally I prefer the English names as that's what I played for so many years).

They even went ahead and included the PG13 US VHS release as an extra. Invalid but nice of them to include it for historical and documentation purposes at least. Now they could have just included the thing as it, but no they made a 1080p transfer of that as well :yikes:
