Star Wars: The Last Jedi Discussion (Spoilers ahead)

Post by mrira » December 16th, 2017, 7:48 pm

What has everyone thought of the movie? Well worth the 2 year wait for me. Nice seeing them bring back Yoda (although he looked different then he did in the Prequels, but still voiced by Frank Oz) to talk Luke back into helping the Resistance. Carrie Fisher's work was amazing & it will suck that she can't be in Ep. IX. Liked how they revealed Luke's inner turmoil of trying to destroy Ben before he could fully comprehend his dark powers, but ended up forcing them out of him.

Things I think need to be explained in Ep. IX
How will the Resistance destroy the Kylo Ren lead First Order?
Will the movie try to explain Leia's absence?
Will Poe take control of the Resistence?
Could they use Fisher's death by saying Kylo kid his mother to kill his inner struggle with the light?
Will Luke return to the movie as a Force Ghost(like Obo Won in the original movies)?
I for some reason don't believe what Ren said about where Rey came from, so will her true heritage come to light?
Will Finn & Rey get together?

It was okay, not great. The story was a mess, but not surprising. When you have films run by the top of the studio instead of the writer/director this is what you get.

As with ALL Disney movies these day, too long. Too much wasted time for scenes that should have been deleted.

Script and plot spun around more times than a figure skater making a jump.

Daisy Ridley was fantastic. Carrie great too, as well as Mark. Award winning? Get a grip.

For the future, I know see why they have talked about a half dozen MORE films, as it just took them TWO films to reset the story. Good grief.

I look forward to new adventures, but TBH how is it that Star Wars Rebels has better stories than a feature film?

Loved the movie. I thought it was a hair too long but was entertained throughout.

It was better than the last one, good not great, felt a bit long, pretty much the same way I feel about most of these blockbusters. I liked the plot better than the last one simply because it didn't feel like a reboot disguised as continuation. My expectations weren't through the roof and they were pretty much met. Enjoyable watch, and I'll pick up the Digital code for $5, but would I race out to the cinema to see it again? No

Is anyone calling for award consideration? Mark, Daisy and Carrie were all quite good FOR THIS KIND OF MOVIE, but award level? Nooooooooo

After 24 hours of digestion, I feel like my major complaint is really the same from TFA, which is that the First Order are a bit too light. They were comic relief in this film, as I was waiting for Lord Helmet and Colonel Sanders to appear any minute! I think it's the Disney affect, unfortunately.

Definitely a tad long, but as a non-fanatic of this series, I had a good time. I liked the comic relief, especially General Hux looking a little more comically evil than The Force Awakens (noticed darker eyes). I personally can have less of spaceships shooting at eachother and more hand to hand combat. Porgs are awesome, BB8 was fun, I enjoyed casino bit even though most people had issues with it.

There's been award buzz for Carrie specifically, which tends to happen for an actor's last role. She won't be nominated posthumously though.

As for my feelings. I loved TFA, but was disappointed with Last Jedi. Not to say that I didn't like it, but it didn't measure up to the storylines built in the previous movie. Too much forced humor where it didn't need it and I didn't like that Boyega was regulated as a side character. And to nitpick two other minor things:

1. If Captain Phasma's armor can deflect blaster shots, why doesn't the First Order make the rest of the Stormtroopers armor out of the same material?

2. This is the first Star Wars movie without a true lightsaber duel! No sabers clashed in the Luke/Kylo battle since Luke was never there.

As stated by others, Daisy was awesome, as was Carrie and Luke towards the end, but the star of the movie was Adam Driver. His character really evolved and I really liked the dynamic with him & Daisy. So it wasn't the worst, but wasn't the best either for me.

Apparently Yoda was a puppet, like in the original 3 movies & not CGI, like in the 3 prequels. Frank Oz performed as the puppet.

Upon a few days reflecting, I actually like The Force Awakens more than this. Maybe not in terms of originality, but the Luke conclusion is sitting less and less well with me. Plus Leia living was dumb to me, and I don't even mean because Carrie dies, but it just would've felt better.

But as crowbar said, I am far from a fanatic for this series, so I stand by enjoying it for what it was. Visually the film clicked and worked as you would expect from Disney.

Everything that was written/done fits the universe. Often it was a take on something done in the OT, more or less. On reflection, I am growing back towards placing it on somewhat even ground with The Force Awakens. To me these films are just chapters now. The OT, despite whatever George planned, sort of came film by film. They are continuations, but I think the greater time gap made them more standalone. Director Rian Johnson has been given his OWN Trilogy to explore away from this group.

what happen to hans funeral? you figure they would show something to say goodbye to him!

how long can a jedi survive in the outer space? how did leia use the force to pull her back to the ship?

i thought both mark and carrie's acting was just pair, it was prob just the writing, but it just was ok!

Finally saw The Last Jedi. I'm shocked I managed to avoid all major spoilers online for this long.

A few notes

This movie reinforced itself as Empire vs Rebels part 2

Yoda Puppet was a nice homage to the OT

Luke was disappointing. I thought we'd at least see a lightsaber dual. But after 3 decades we now know Darth Vader will forever remain Luke's only lightsaber opponent in all valid Star Wars material. Wow just wow. And in the the last two movies he stayed on that island. Though I guess he will pull an Obi Wan and be a force ghost mentor

Everyone is dead. Luke, Han, Snoke, we know Leia will have to somehow be dead.

I actually was rooting for Finn as a Kamikaze pilot. Sadly I was left disappointed on that front.

This should not be a surprise. Disney did this on purpose, as they do all the franchises. Keep squeezing the $. Don't change the formula.

Well we know why you rooted for Finn to die. You don't have Boyega!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how believable a senior citizen like Hamill would be in a light saber duel? I thought the Palpatine CGI work in Revenge of the Sith was absolutely comical.
