Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan and more in Washington DC

Post by Joresky » December 6th, 2017, 11:10 am

This past weekend I went to Washington DC to meet some cool celebrities. My friend Joe picked me up at my house early Saturday morning and we headed down to get a good spot. I got to the spot and my good friend Troy was there and I would later be joined by more good friends.. Jason, Steve B, Dave "Pornstache" and his brother Mike and Francesco (my new Italian friend.. really awesome guy). For this event it takes two days of waiting and long hours outside so I packed warm clothing, a comfortable portable chair and food so I could do this event with greater ease. The names that I knew that would be there ahead of time included Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, Norman Lear, LL Cool J and Carmen de Lavallade. I already had photos with everyone who I knew who was going to be at this event aside from Carmen (and I needed a better pic with Lionel) but the reason to go is because anyone could show up so if I decided to skip it I might miss out on some great scores. At first I was thinking of skipping Saturday to attend Winter Con in NYC but after Caroline Blakiston cancelled the decision was easy. The first photo I got Saturday was a male ballet dancer named Damian Woetzel. He was cool and did it for everyone who asked. Next I got another photo with Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC who I've met many times and he signed a postcard for me that a guy with him gave me that was promoting his comic book. Next I saw Emily Estefan, daughter of Gloria and Emilio Estefan who is currently an up and coming singer. Gloria and Emilio showed up but didn't have time to stop unfortunately. I was surprised because I saw Gloria a few years ago and she was very friendly. Next I scored a photo with singer Leona Lewis. She was friendly and did it for everyone no problem. After this singer Lionel Richie showed up and did photos for many but I wasn't able to get one. When he came back out he did photos and signed for the rest of us and I was able to score an upgraded photo (no shades this time thankfully). After this I scored a photo with actress/dancer Carmen de Lavallade. I'm not familiar with her dancing career but I do know her from her role as the judge in the Adam Sandler movie Big Daddy which I love. After this LL Cool J showed up and took care of everyone. I already had a nice photo with LL from NYC years ago but I got another. This time he shook my hand in the pic so that made it a little different.. only thing that sucks about the pic is it was too bright behind us. Country singer Luke Bryan showed up but he did nothing for nobody. Busta Rhymes also showed up and did nothing which wasn't surprising based on my previous encounter with him. Norman Lear showed up but didn't stop which many were bummed about but at least I had the opportunity to score a combo with him last year. I don't blame him for not stopping since he is 95 years old and it was a bit cold out and there was a decent sized After this hours went by and there wasn't much action but eventually we saw Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder show up. I needed both but I had free tickets to a show so me and my buddy Troy left and went to see the show. I later found out that Stevie took photos and Quincy signed and did one photo. The show I went to was amazing and I got to score combos from actors John de Lancie (Q in Star Trek The Next Generation.. upgraded from a beard to no beard photo) and actor Brian George (Babu in TVs Seinfeld, Employee of the Month). We also got photos with actresses Laura C Harris and Kimberly Schraf who have no movie or TV credits but many plays (maybe this will change at some point). Unfortunately we missed actor Haaz Sleiman while I was busy talking to John de Lancie. He has some TV credits but isn't a big name at all so this wasn't a huge deal. At this point me and Troy headed to my parents house (only 20 minutes north of DC) where my mom made us a late dinner and we got some rest before waking up early again to do it all over again.

We woke up early and headed back to the spot for day two of combo hunting. The weather was warmer on Sunday so it was more pleasant to be waiting outside and it seemed like we had more success. I scored another photo with Black Thought of the Roots who I have met a couple times in the past. Quest Love from the Roots showed up too but I didn't score a pic.. no biggie since I have a couple from past meets. Darryl McDaniels showed back up and was wearing a cool Nirvana t-shirt this time so I got another photo with him. This guy has great taste in music. Next director JJ Abrams showed up and I got another photo this time (shades, hat and a beard this time) and he signed a blank for me. I told him congratulations on landing the Star Wars Episode 9 directing gig. JJ is one of the nicest guys out there and I'm so happy about this because I am a huge fan of his work. Next I got a photo with rapper MC Lyte. My first photo she had shades on but she came back out without shades and I got an upraded pic. Comedian Dave Chappelle showed up and I got another pic with him. I know I've met him a few times in the past but he is my favorite comedian so I will take a photo with him every time I see him. Next singer Chaka Khan shows up and I score a photo with her although it sucks she has shades on. I hear she is normally very difficult so I should be grateful I got this one period. Next actor Anthony Anderson shows up who I have met many time in the past but I score an updated photo and an autograph on a blank. After this actor/director Rob Reiner shows up and I score a combo plus one (my friend got my 2nd DVD signed). I got him in Maryland in the past year but I was happy to meet him again... very nice guy. Next I scored a fresh photo with actress Eva Longoria but unfortunately she was wearing shades... hope I can upgrade this pic at some point. Next actress Rita Moreno shows up and we score photos (already had her twice though). Country singer Luke Bryan shows up and again does nothing for nobody. Country singer Kenny Rogers shows up and does nothing going in and going out they do autograph send ins but unfortunately he didn't do any photo ops because he appeared to be in bad shape (he walked very slowly). After this we got photos with singer Renee Fleming (had her already), Misty Copeland (ballerina.. hear shes a big name), Rebecca Luker (think I had her already too), Nicole Richie (with shades unfortunately) and singer Leona Lewis (upgrade from pic I got before). After a while we saw Stevie Wonder go in but he says he will do it on the way out. We wait a long while but true to his word Stevie Wonder comes out and takes photos for everyone who is waiting. I got a great photo and my miss from the previous night was redeemed. At this point we went to a different spot that was close by to wait for celebs to enter the actual event. Gloria and Emilio Estefan arrived and I got a great fresh photo with Emilio and I tried to get an updated photo with Gloria (got her a few years ago) but unfortunately it didn't come out and I didn't have a chance at a retake. Next I got a fresh photo with singer Jon Secada. LL Cool J showed up next but I didn't get a photo with him this time but thankfully my friend Troy got one and he never had him before. Lynda Carter and Cal Ripken Jr showed up next and I had gotten them in the past but I had a Wonder Woman DVD to get signed by Lynda. I took photos for my friend Troy but unfortunately Lynda didn't sign my DVD. Lastly I got a photo with Mackenzie Phillips who I had already from a previous encounter. Nobody else really stopped. I would have liked to have scored no shades pics with Eva Longoria and Nicole Richie but unfortunately they didn't stop. Overall I had hits and misses this weekend but I got some great fresh names and some cool repeats so it was definitely worth attending.

Nice gets down there, Stevie and Lionel. Sucks about Kenny Rogers, he'd be the one I would have wanted the most. And I have told you to fix your camera settings for how many years now??? You have too much yellow and the exposure has to be made negative.

I've actually been experimenting with blown photos via photoshop. May not do very much for extreme cases but for lesser cases it certainly makes it look better.
