Meeting the Mob: A Cuppa Goodfellas, an Irishman, Hoffa, Capone & My Cousin Vinny!!!

Post by heelorton79 » December 26th, 2017, 2:30 am

First, I hope that everyone is enjoying the holiday season and I wish a Happy New Year to all! Regarding the hobby, this has probably been my best year yet and I appreciate everyone taking the time to check out my reports.

Now onto the report…
I have been very excited about the new Scorsese film, “The Irishman” ever since I first heard about it over a year ago, and for good reasons. I have been a fan of mob-related movies all my life and I know with Scorsese at the helm and an amazing cast, it probably won’t disappoint. The combination of Scorsese, De Niro, and Pesci had not failed in the past, with a resume including “Goodfellas”, “Casino”, and “Raging Bull”. Additionally, this film provides a landmark as this will be the first time Marty works with the great Al Pacino. As far as collecting goes, there were a few things on my radar. My picture with Scorsese from many years ago was on that doomed roll of film which never got developed. My interactions with Scorsese over the past couple of years have left something to be desired for and now this photo was in my top 5 wants. As nice as he is, he usually gets mobbed by the same autograph hounds over and over again, which makes the photo difficult to get. Furthermore, I had not gotten a photo with Robert De Niro in 12 years and while I rarely go out seeking an update, c’mon…this was Bobby D…one of my all-time favorites! I also figured that even though I generally am not an autograph person, while there I would make an attempt to get something signed just because of who they are and my fan level. Now, while I figured Pesci would be difficult, just getting to see this reclusive actor in person would be awesome. Finally, I needed a photo with a major player in the “Boardwalk Empire” series for my collection… the young Al Capone, played by Stephen Graham, also in this film.

While I wanted to make my visit to “The Irishman” a priority, early on other things kept coming up that were one-time chances, whereas I had many chances for the cast of the movie. I also didn’t know what security would be like due to the celebrity nature of the cast. I then heard reports on Joe Pesci denying anyone who came near him, and not in a nice way either. When I finally headed out, I made my first priority Martin Scorsese. I arrived and thankfully there were no graphers in sight. Well, I didn’t have to wait long for Marty as he walked out to begin his day. This was what would be a very rare instance during filming where he would be without any security. The only issue was…he was wearing sunglasses. Now, normally I wouldn’t mind not getting a re-do, but Scorsese’s unique eyebrows are one of his trademark features. By the time I was able to approach the man a second time, a couple of random graphers had arrived and a bunch of passersby had lined-up to meet Marty. Still, he took care of everyone before leaving, and I got a perfect upgrade.

I want to throw in here that the security was all-around very cool. They knew our approach and understood that they didn’t have to worry about us hassling and running up to the celebs, or throwing shit in their faces to get signed (or cameras for that matter). The staff was very friendly to us as well. During one instance, they even gave my friends and I pizza to eat while waiting! This was definitely the most accommodating bunch of people that I had ever experienced on set. Although speaking of approaches, at one point a passerby shoved his camera in Pesci’s face, putting him in a bad mood. This messed up any chance of us getting the picture with (even after the guy apologized), but still, Pesci approached us and shook our hands. Meeting the man himself was a great experience left as is. I had planned to go back another day, and while the person who I normally collect with was busy with school stuff, my other friend joined. I hadn’t seen him in a while and he was off from work that day. He hadn’t been on set yet and really wanted to try for a few names, including Pesci. It was a nice day outside and a good atmosphere. Once again, I got to meet Joe Pesci and I told him how excited I was about the new film. (Not sure he felt the same, based on reports of him constantly declining to do the role). This man was again, as nice as can be…a true gentleman. After he posed with us, he thanked us for waiting. He offered to sign for us, but we didn’t have any merchandise. He said that he would take care of us next time. Anyway, the photo with him was more than enough and all I wanted.

Just when I thought this experience could not have gotten any better, I was able to score two new photos with Robert De Niro, both in and out of costume and make-up. De Niro has become very nice over the past few years (he was never mean to my knowledge, but used to be very difficult for the photo), but I was shocked at how cool he was here. After we approached, he gave his bag to his security, and even took off his hat and glasses! While he was getting ready to take the picture, I stood right next to him silently…looking at him...thinking to myself...damn, I am like 2 inches away from ROBERT DE NIRO...THE LEGEND! Even though I had met him before, this was just a surreal experience. He was so cool, and even signed my friend’s DVD “Hello! Bob De Niro”. After we thanked him, he left us with "no problem, just don't vote for Trump!" However, the second photo is probably my favorite, based on his smile.

The experience would not be complete without meeting Al Pacino once again. Besides, I wanted him to sign some things for me. Once again, security was really cool and had Mr. Pacino come over to us. No graphers were around and he gave us nice autographs. Of course I took another photo with him (my 5th… c’mon this was Al Pacino…another one of my all-time favorites) and this one turned out to probably be my favorite. Pacino is just a great dude and always seems to be in great spirits. He then went over and took photos with a few cops (which De Niro did at a later point in the day as well).

As far as the other cast members go, it was really cool to get Stephen Graham, who was nice. Anna Paquin, who is as sweet as they come, proved to be no different here. My friend was the one who needed the pic but I have always loved her, so I took an update. When I asked her to stop I didn’t realize she had these metal curlers in her hair, so she asked me if I could wait a few minutes while she had them taken out (she mentioned that she looked like she was transmitting signals into space). I felt a bit funny and apologized to her for not being aware of them. Anna is always great and one of my favorite celebs to see in person and on the screen. I cleaned up on a lot of the supporting cast, including Kathrine Narducci (a big “Sopranos” want of mine) who I missed at Chiller, Jesse Plemons, and Welker White (who had a great part in "Goodfellas"). Ray Romano was fantastic, but don’t ask me why I have three with him…I am really not sure. I was also able to get a couple of supporting cast group shots which was fun. I didn’t see Harvey Keitel or Bobby Cannavale but I already have photos with them and wasn’t going to put any extra time in (especially since I just got Cannavale a couple of months ago).

As far as the autographs go, I purchased the same “Godfather” book that my friend had Francis sign. We both got great Pacino autographs and De Niro as well. De Niro also signed the “Taxi Driver” pop and as mentioned earlier my friend got the ‘Taxi Driver” DVD signed by him and Scorsese. Finally, I had an 8x10 singed by Scorsese, De Niro, and Pacino. Again, this turned out be a really cool thing with good results. I am looking forward to seeing this film, especially since Netflix is doing it, so some of the normal reigns have been eliminated. Even though I could watch it at home when it is released, I am planning on seeing it during its limited run in theaters just to see it on the big screen. Here are the pictures…

This is one of THE best reports/photos I have ever seen on this site. The fact you got all of these gentlemen at one movie set is incredible in itself. Bravo!I wish one day I could meet DeNiro. He is my all time favorite actor. Glad to hear he is a good guy.

A quick note if I may: close to 20, maybe 25 years ago, through a close friend of my father's, I was told if I ever wanted anything autographed by Joe Pesci, I could just drop everything off at one of his homes in NJ (this was when I was much more of an autograph hound with a TON more time on my hands). I was very nervous but when I arrived, I was not only welcomed through his gates but got to go in his home and he was actually home to meet him. I felt like a tool because I had blabbed to people at work that I was just "dropping off" photos and then to actually give them TO HIM was surreal ("Goodfellas", "Lethal Weapon" and "Casino" pics all were in my hands). I remember his house was all in white and by the front door he had a giant framed pic of him and DeNiro in "Raging Bull." The best part? Before I left, he signed a photo for me from HIS collection. After learning my first name is Vincent, he signed a B&W promo shot from a certain movie with the inscription:

"To My Cousin Vinny, God is Good. Joe Pesci."

AWESOME!

Congrats again on the great report and happy holidays everyone!

This is incredible.

You've honestly gotten my favorite photos of the entire year. Well done!

Curious to know if they're still filming this, and if so, do you know when they wrap?

I've heard they have a few months left, and probably return in a few weeks.
