"Smoke" Those Tires Rex Manning!

Post by Greg2600 » January 21st, 2018, 1:51 pm

Once again I drove to my favorite cow pasture on earth. Yup, Oaks, Pennsylvania! For the second year in a row, the Motorsports show they have included a major NASCAR headliner. Last year it was the King, Richard Petty, but this time it was “Smoke” Tony Stewart. Tony retired from NASCAR driving 2 years ago, but still competes at smaller venues all over the world. His ability to compete in multiple racing series and categories has made him one of the sports all-time greats. His fan interactions though have left quite a lot to be desired! Typically he would rush everyone through, wouldn’t talk to you, and forget photos with. At the race track he was even worse, very grouchy! Well, he did a few appearances since retiring, and I was told he was much nicer, so I wanted to give it a shot.

I left early, arrived to a short line outside. Luckily it was warmer, so it was a pleasant wait. They let us in, I bought my ticket for $15, and eventually grabbed a seat in the main stage hall. Larry McReynolds, the former NASCAR crew chief for Dale Earnhardt and Davey Allison, as well as FOX analyst, was there as well. I scooted through his short line and just got a photo with him. Another former driver, Randy LaJoie, was in the main hall with his racing seat company, and I got a photo with him as well.

Tony arrived about half an hour late, but promptly started. I was a bit concerned that very few people were getting table photos with him, but I think most just didn’t bother to ask. The line moved pretty fast, and within 25 minutes I was up. I took a shaky selfie, which Tony laughed at, but the old guy in line after me offered to take it instead. Big racing meet for me, came out great! I left, grabbed lunch, and drove on home.

At night I made a late NYC run, hoping to get Lori Petty, but after waiting awhile didn’t see her. I went to another spot and got photos with a couple easy Brit actors. One was Maxwell Caulfield from Grease 2 and Empire Records, who I skipped at Chiller. The other was Mark Addy, from A Knight’s Tale and Full Monty.

I know absolutely nothing about NASCAR but sounds like a great event -- plus, I know who Tony Stewart is, so great score.

Wish Richard Petty would come back. The only NASCAR name I'd care to meet.
