My First MonsterMania is a total Shit Show

Post by Btvsp3 » March 12th, 2018, 4:20 am

If you read all this I commend you. It was a lot and I needed to get it all off my chest.

So, apparently I picked a hell of a year to start attending MonsterMania. When the minor IT kids were announced I started considering going, but when Tim Curry was announced I bought my ticket and planned my trip. Seems I wasn't the only one. From people who had attended the con in the past I always heard that this was a very laid back show and I was assured it would be an easy day. As many of you know already, it was anything but. I had a lot I wanted to get done and only Saturday to do it.

I arrived 10 minutes after 10 and luckily I got dropped off so I didn't have to find parking, because there was none to be found. I got inside and was greeted by a mob of people. I walked around for a minute to see the layout and the line for Tim Curry was already long and he didn't start until 12. I went to see Cassandra Petersen and her line was also quite long. I still needed to buy My Sean Astin op since he wasn't doing table ops and his op was at 11:45am. I figured I had a little time so I went for the Killer Klowns stars first since I figured their lines would be short. I was right. No one was on line for Grant Cramer so I went for him first. Got the autograph on my Killer Klowns Steelbook and the free table op. I then went to Suzanne Snyder who was as nice as could be and got her autograph and picture as well. I asked the lady behind me on line to take the picture, which turned out to be a mistake since she took a few steps back to take the picture. So me and Suzanne are off to the side and very small. I cropped the picture, but the quality is pretty bad now. But not the end of the world.

So far so good.

Here's where I start to realize exactly how badly organized this show was. I then went to purchase my Sean Astin op. I asked a volunteer if the line next to the entrance was correct to purchase a photo op. He told me no and I have to head upstairs. So I head up and am told by a volunteer to get on a long line for photo ops. After 10 minutes of not moving I get the feeling something isn't right and at this point the op is in 25 minutes. I ask another volunteer and am told to get on a much shorter line next to that other line. A few minutes later and we're just standing there. I ask the guy in front of me to make sure this is the correct place. He tells me he has the photo op pre-purchased and just has to redeem his. WTF? I ask ANOTHER volunteer and am told I had to purchase the photo op downstairs by the entrance. WHICH IS WHERE I ASKED THE ORIGINAL VOLUNTEER WHO SENT ME UPSTAIRS. :angrybird:

The volunteer personally escorts me and a few others to go to the front of the line to buy my op, which was supposed to be starting at that very moment. We are then led upstairs into a waiting room. Then to our surprise Sean comes in the room and answers some questions. He seems like a really nice guy, but I'm still annoyed about the pro op situation. They start letting people in for the IT kids ops including the group op, which I haven't had a chance to redeem because I was in such a hurry to get to Sean. I ask the Wolf Studios employee and he tells me as soon as I'm done with my op to run downstairs redeem my IT op and run back upstairs. So I hurry in and get my Sean Astin op. The flash hit my glasses which really pisses me off. For the price I'm paying they should have offered to retake the shot. :killme:

So I'm on the move again and have to push my way through the crowds to get downstairs to wait online for my redemption. Once that's done I try to get back upstairs but the stairway is completely congested. I manage to get back up stairs and am met with a crowd of people so big that no one could move an inch, let alone me being able to get back down that hallway. They start instructing everyone for the IT Group Op towhead downstairs and out of the building to wait on line! As I'm heading outside I hear the volunteers start to turn people away that the con is sold out. It's quite obvious at this point that the con is dangerously oversold. Some girls on line start talking about someone who passed out earlier that morning. After about 35 minutes the IT kids walk past us and head inside. No idea what they were doing outside to begin with since the op was supposed to have started awhile ago. While waiting outside in the cold FOR OVER AN HOUR, an ambulance pulls up and the medics rushes inside. They come out a little while later with no one on the gurney and drive off. Finally the line starts moving and I head in and get my op.

I then head back to redemptions to redeem my other 2 ops. I have a little time before my next op so I head to Elvira and the line is still WAY too long. So I head to the room where the Jasons, It Kids, and Kathleen Turner are. I head to Ken Kirzinger's table as he's the only Jason I really care about. Freddy Vs Jason was the first horror movie I snuck into at the age of 13 with my old friend. That friend died a few years ago so getting this pic and signature meant a lot to me as I knew how much it would have meant to my him. Unfortunately Ken was already upstairs getting dressed for his pro op so I'd have to come back later. I head over to Sharni Vinson and there's only 1 person on line for her. We have a nice talk about how packed the con is. She's incredibly sweet. I get her to sign my You're Next Steelbook and get my photo.

I check Kathleen's line but it's too long and I know I'll never make it to my op. I head out of the room and as I do they close off the Riverside Pavilion and am no longer allowing people in per the Fire Marshal's orders. I get on line for Elvira AGAIN but there's no way I'll make it in time. I run to the bathroom to get changed for my Jason Pro Op. I then head upstairs and am told they still have awhile to go before they get to the Jasons. I'm told to come back later. I ask how much later and am told "Probably an hour or so". Not exactly reassuring. I head downstairs again and get on line for Elvira. (Spoiler alert: I realized I didn't have time for her AGAIN.) After waiting 30 minutes and the line isn't moving I head back upstairs to check on the Jason Op. I'm told their not lining people up for that yet. I ask when about how long it should be and if there's a time I should check back. The answer I get? "No. Come back later." SERIOUSLY?! :f8you: So I see they're finally letting people back into the Riverside Pavilion so I head in and get online for Kathleen Turner. It's pretty slow moving, but I want to make sure I get this in. I was hoping to not meet anyone in my costume, but I wasn't gonna have time to change again. I get up to Kathleen and she laughs. She's disgusted by my costume and proclaims "Oh god I can't even look at you!". I get my autograph and photo and she tells me with a laugh not to get too close to her. I've heard some bad things from people, but she was really nice to me.

With that I head back upstairs as I'm being told lines for the IT kids are being capped off and I was hoping to get individual shots with them and autographs. Not the end of the world, as I got the group shot and it would save me $200 if I didn't get them. They're young, I'm sure they'll have a lot more conventions ahead of them. When I get upstairs I ask about Ken Kirzinger's pro op and am told they finished his awhile ago and to head into the room right away. :fack: I figured that volunteer didn't know what he was talking about. Luckily Ken's still in costume so they call him over and I quickly get my op.

Image

I head back downstairs and it's now 4:30pm. I quickly get changed. Still on my to do list are Elvira, Tim Curry, Ken (not in costume), and the IT kids, which I'm sure I'm not going to have time for. I get on line for Elvira. I refuse to get off line until I get her. Which I do after waiting over an hour. Finally at 5:45 I get her! I decide against an autograph since the item I'd really like her to sign, her movie, isn't out on Blu-Ray until later this year. I have her hold my Funko Pop for the picture since she's not in costume.

Image

Tim Curry stops taking photos in 15 minutes! So I RUN to his room and am told to quickly get online. 4 people get on behind me and they cap the line. Just made it. I know some people were reluctant to get him because of his condition, but his voice is still the same and just hearing him say my name and getting to shake his hand was well worth it. A really strong handshake too all things considered!

Image

It's now after 6pm and autographings are done. The Riverside Pavilion where Ken is, is closed off as they are converting the room into a Q&A room for John Carpenter. I wait on this line pretending to be interested in John, but I have my Freddy Vs Jason Blu-Ray, a marker, and $40 dollars in hand hoping to catch Ken leaving. I spot Sharni leaving and I wave to her. She stops and says "It's nice to see you again! Have a good night" before heading off. Again, I must say. She's so sweet. Richard Dreyfuss exits and I wave to him and he waves back. Finally I spot Ken Kirzinger exiting the room. The man is 6'5 and towers over me. I get off line and run after him. He can't seem to hear me calling his name and right outside the men's room I tap him on the shoulder and ask if he's Ken Kirzinger. He responds with "Yeah I'm Ken and I really have to pee, can I help you?" I quickly explain my situation and offer to pay him for the autograph and a quick picture. He asks if I'll be back tomorrow and I explain that I won't and I have to head back to NY. He agrees to help me out! :score: He signs my Freddy Vs Jason Steelbook and I grab a quick selfie outside the men's room. His combo price was $30 so he asks if I have change and I don't so I tell him to keep the $40 because I really appreciate him stopping to help me out and I felt bad bothering him. I love how the signature looks too!

And with that my day is done. I completed everything I wanted minus the IT kids individually, but saved $200 in the process so I can't complain. Very disorganized and way overcrowded I'd like to say this will be my first and last MonsterMania, but with Robert Englund at their next show I'll definitely be there. I need him on my Freddy Vs Jason Steelbook. Hopefully they get their shit together by August, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Robert always had massive lines even back when MonsterMania was run efficiently. So my advice to you is to commit to being there before the doors open, then whenever they do open the doors, get immediately onto Robert's line, and budget at least a couple of hours for him. Go on Friday if that's an option for you, because Saturday will be even worse for him. If they offer a VIP with a line-skip option for him, I'd grab that too. He'll have a huge line all day, and at some point they'll cap it off, so plan accordingly.

Read this in :melopain: :melopain: :melopain: :melopain:!!!!

Being forced to wait in line after line without answers infuriates me. Doing it outside in the cold! I wouldn't have handled it without screaming at them. I do think you deserve some type of award to making it through this con for the first time, AND doing wardrobe changes! Pro Ops came out really good.

PS: AJ is correct, if you can spare the $, VIP for Englund is really the way to go. Otherwise you will be forced to sit or stand on line for 3, 4, 5 hours for him. We are NOT exaggerating.

This seemed like a painful show, but you really came away with some great stuff regardless, so well done!

enjoyed reading your post. I was there on Friday since I've never enjoyed Saturday shows anyway. My mind is filled with all these comments and such about my experience on Friday and seeing the cluster on Saturday, but instead of wasting time expressing, I'm just going to continue to read em. I empathize with you....

On a positive.... I wanted to say that photo you got with Jason (forgot which actor!) is amazing and i'm not even a fan of friday the 13th. Really neat and a great conversation starter as opposed to the usual cookie cutter pro photo ops. Great job on that, my choice for pro photo of the year (if these markedout awards really even mean anything anyway!) Same with IT Kids photo which is the best I saw and not sure why you even would want individual photos let alone spend more money on them? Consider yourself Richie Tozier in this picture. :)

It sucks you had such a hectic time at your first Monster Mania con but you got some great pics and autographs so I'd say it was definitely worthwhile

Thank you! I figured if I was going to pay that money for the costumed op I had to go all in and commit to it. When it comes to the IT kids I mainly wanted to get my Steelbook signed and it was only an extra $10 a piece to get the individual pics.

Why do I get the feeling that if Kathleen Turner tells any of her friends about her experience at Monster Mania, she's gonna be mentioning your costume ! :hahahanx:

I sure hope so! I really didn't want to wear it while meeting the other celebs, but her reaction made me glad I did. :hahaaa:
