Greg2.6K's Boob Tube Combosity War: Opening Salvo

Post by Greg2600 » May 28th, 2018, 5:52 pm

Day Zero

Another TV week is in the books, and this was probably the most boring, lackluster, and featured the most time wasting yet, I had some nice successes. One of the general observations I can make this year was that while in the past, the lodgings seemed to bear more fruit, that wasn’t the case this time. Obviously hind sight is 20/20, as they say, but what can you do? The weather was the worst it’s ever been, with rain coming down at least half the time.

So here we go. On day one, I came in to try a sneak on Josh Brolin. Unfortunately this didn’t pan out at all, although with rain I really didn’t miss much elsewhere. As a result, I moved to the NBC spot to join WOODMO there. On the way, I run into Eric Bana, and exchange pleasantries as I had him already. This spot is not a favorite of mine, as it has entrances on either side, and you just can’t cover both. Anywho, I see a bunch of girls from out of town waiting for celebs as they arrive from the airport. Most stop only briefly though. I do see Neil Flynn from The Middle and Scrubs exit, and get him no problem. While there, a couple women walk past, and one sounded annoyed by everyone waiting. Unfortunately, I only got a good look too late, but it looked like Pam Grier! In fact, Pam is apparently now on This is Us, so her presence kind of made sense. Anyway, no one saw her again, and obviously I hope she makes it to the con later this year.

I then joined the rest on the other side, and there’s just no room to get anybody as they are leaving. At one point, Seth McFarlane and co. arrive and go in. I probably should have gone back to the other side for them to go back out, because that’s what they did. Eventually, the ppl at the rails all left, and I’m joined by DJ and CM as well as Joresky. Did get Morris Chestnut (Boyz N da Hood, V), Ne-Yo (super nice), a punchy Simon Cowell, and LaRoyce Hawkins (Chicago P.D.). The big want for me was Andy Samberg, but the blanked me twice that night! I suppose my best score was Prison Break staple Paul Adelstein.

We should have moved on to a certain event, but we lazily did not, where most of the NBC names were secured by others. To be honest, there just wasn’t much for me from this network. I really wanted several of the USA cable names, but they were elsewhere and I didn’t have time to go wait on them. Though I heard Gina Torres, per usual, refused people.

Day One

And now we really pick up steam. I arrive via the smelly PATH train, hoping that the Deadpool cast make a visit, as their earlier ones were too crowded. My allergies were absolutely terrible on this day and the next, so I kept my shades on whenever possible. My eyes were really burning. At this spot, Mary Steenburgen exited and racked, so I took a dual shaded update with one of the nicest actresses there is! David Duchovny was inside as well, and amazingly, I had something for him to sign for once. It was an X-Files VHS pamphlet, and he did so no problem. My friend Josh and I then began walking uptown, when I spot someone and run her down. It’s Katherine Heigl, and she does the photo no problem! We start moving again, when I bump into Glenn “Dennis” Howerton from Always Sunny. I then proceed to quiz him on all the shows he and the boys are producing, and get a funny update. Such a cool guy.

I join up with some other people I know, and we head for the FOX mayhem. We arrive, and at first, we secure perfect spots along the rail and wait and wait. Finally about 45 minutes before the action is starting, the cops chase us to another spot which is far worse. Here we wait another whatever, and slowly everyone starts moving back to where we were, and of course, the cops are gone. I really had a prime spot here, where I could scream for the celebs to come over. I would be flanked for the next few hours by Josh, Joresky, British graphers, and some Boston peeps. We all worked really well together, and had no issues between us. The main problem would be the dumb tourists walking by, and trying to stick cellphones in my face. I must have literally swatted six or seven of them out of my way.

One of my goals was to have a cast piece done from The Gifted, which I really liked last season. I had good photos with all but two people anyway. Long story short, I was able to have all but Percy Hynes White, who seemed to be on crack or something, and stormed away. Amy Acker did it in gold though, the rest black, so I may need a redo from her at some point. But I got Stephen Moyer, Sean Teale, Natalie Alyn Lind, Coby Bell, Jamie Chung, Blair Redford, and Emma Dumont on it. I also got a photo with Skyler Samuels, who is a fairly prominent character now.

Now for the rest, one of the biggest names to just absolutely go nuts was Taraji Henson, who I’ve never had even a chance for at this spot. She usually doesn’t do it, or very little. However, being recently engaged, she was flying high, and legit did the entire barricade a la Terrence Howard a year ago! I loved her on Person of Interest, and her leaving was a shark jump moment for me. I also grabbed a pic with Gordon Ramsey of Kitchen Nightmares, who ironically once ruined a restaurant they were supposed to save near my job! Nobody else recognized him, so I shouted for soccer great Alexei Lalas to come over, and got the photo. We both went to Rutgers!

Here’s a big one for me, over comes Jennifer Love Hewitt, who was added to the series 9-1-1 as a surprise. Huge want of mine, and I get the photo. Obviously argh that I didn’t have my Can’t Hardly Wait item with me. Another surprise was to finally see Prison Break’s Rockmond Dunbar on hand, and I got the full combo. C-Note in the house! Yet another old favorite was Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who was as nice as always and I got the full combo. My photo from a few years ago was annoyingly blurry. Despite seeing Robin Lord Taylor 70 times a year it seems, I usually don’t ask him for another pic, but I did this time. So happy to hear that Gotham will return next season!

The elderly cast of The Cool Kids surprisingly came over, aside from the putrid David Alan Grier. I got photos with Carol Burnett Show legend Vicki Lawrence and Leslie Jordan, but Martin Mull kept skipping around us. The show is written by Charlie Day, so I MUST check it out. Emily VanCamp also went down the line, but Sean William Scott started next to me, and went right, and never came back. Tim Allen also blanked our end, though did a few photos on the way in.

I then moved over to another FOX spot, that has been good in years past. I wasn’t this time, as hardly anyone was stopping. I missed Stiffler here too, but did get a photo with Percy from Gifted but no graph. Also got singer/actor Riley Smith. The faux pa if you will was that a lot of people were hiding inside, and getting photos. This is something I’m not very comfortable with. Though obviously in hindsight I would have gotten Tim and Sean there. The biggest shock was I leave to return home, and heard that not long after Fergie walked out and down into the subway, doing combos as she went!

Instead, I opted to walk a bit for the Deadpool cast and join Class316 over there. The spot was terrible, and though I maybe could have fought for a few cast members, I simply didn’t want to stick around. We drove down to a spot for Josh Brolin, were we eventually were joined by a few graphers, including the infamous Stuart, who ruined Brolin on this trip. Josh arrived and signed a few, but ignored photo pleas and ran inside. At least the rain stayed away.

Are you sure we saw each other Day 0? I only went to FOX and other other Peacock location.

Sucks I missed Emily & MPG at FOX but can’t be two places at once.

Great stuff Greg. Percy was weird last year too. I mean, he did it, but he was like super awkward and seemed almost frightened. I chalked it off to young actor having first year, wtf is going on, type of reaction and jitters, but maybe not.
