Putin gets authorization for military force in Syria

Post by class316 » September 30th, 2015, 5:47 am

The upper chamber of the Russian parliament has unanimously given a formal consent to President Putin to use the nation’s military in Syria to fight terrorism at a request from the Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Consent was necessary for use of the country's military for foreign combat missions under the Russian constitution.

The request for use of force was sent by the president after considering the large number of citizens of Russia and neighboring countries, who went to join terrorist groups fighting in Syria, head of the presidential administration Sergey Ivanov told media. There are thousands of them, and Russia’s national security would be under threat, should they return home, he added.

“This is not about reaching for some foreign policy goals, satisfying ambitions, which our Western partners regularly accuse us of. It’s only about the national interest of the Russian Federation,” the official said.

Ivanov stressed that no ground operations are planned in Syria. Russia would use its warplanes to hit terrorist targets when requested by the Syrian government. He stressed that unlike the US-led coalition of countries that bombs militant troops in Syria, Russia was invited to do so by the legal authorities of Syria and thus follows international law.

“The military goal of the operation is strictly to provide air support for the [Syrian] government forces in their fight against Islamic State,” he said.

Russia coming to the rescue of Assad against the evil forces that flourished after Saddam Hussein fell. Pity Russia won't be attacking the so called "rebels" backed by the US, but hopefully ridding Syria of ISIS gives Assad the strength to rid himself of those forces as well.

I don't particularly like Russia but anyone against ISIS (Which is pretty much the entire world) is okay by me.

The situation in Syria is far more complicated than "killing the bad guys." It's a multifaceted civil war that was caused, in part, by the meddling of the United States, Russia, and Iran, who all have a stake in the leadership of Syria.

It is more like "Assad or not Assad" than "killing the bad guys"

Thankfully Russia is on Assad's side. And Assad being alive is key to stability (or at least a step that way).

Apparently Russia has bombed a city controlled by "rebels". Putin don't give a shit :praise:
Washington (CNN)Russia has conducted its first airstrike against ISIS in Syria, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

The airstrike targeted ISIS military equipment, communications centers, vehicles and ammunition, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said, as part of pinpoint strikes against ISIS ground targets.

But a senior U.S. administration official told CNN's Elise Labott the Russian airstrike near the city of Homs "has no strategic purpose" in terms of combating ISIS, which "shows they are not there to go after ISIL." ISIL is another acronym for ISIS.

The official said the U.S. had no intention of preventing the strikes but that Russian planes didn't seem to be flying in areas where the U.S. was operating. "They are not stupid," the official said.

The State Department said U.S.-led coalition missions were continuing as normal despite an advance warning and request from Russia to stay out of Syrian airspace.

Russia's first airstrikes in Syria Wednesday targeted areas held by rebels receiving arms, funding, and training from the CIA and killed dozens of civilians, according to U.S. officials and published reports.

The Syrian National Council, a group opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, told Sky News that at least 36 people had been killed by airstrikes in the western city of Homs, including five children. Khaled Khoja, the SNC's leader, told Sky that none of the four areas targeted by Russian planes Wednesday contained ISIS fighters and called Moscow's claim that it was helping the U.S.-led coalition defeat the terror group "baseless."

A senior U.S. defense official said the Russian strikes targeted fighters in the vicinity of Homs, located roughly 60 miles east of a Russian naval facility in Tartus, and were carried out by a "couple" of Russian bombers. In a video released by the U.S.-backed rebel group Tajamu Alezzah, jets are seen hitting a building claimed to be a location of the group in the town of Latamna in the central Hama province.

It seems China is going to be joining Russia and Iran to help Assad.

With 2 major world powers plus Iran helping Assad retain power, looks like Obama will be left with his dick in his hands :like:
China will be helping out the Syrian government in the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS) by sending “military advisers,” media reports have claimed.

“The Chinese will be arriving in the coming weeks,” a Syrian army official told the Lebanon-based news website Al-Masdar Al-‘Arabi.

The report claims that a Chinese naval vessel is on its way to Syria with dozens of “military advisers” on board. They will reportedly be followed by troops.

The ship is said to have passed the Suez Canal in Egypt and be making its way through the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the website, the advisers will be joining Russian personnel in the Latakia region.

Meanwhile, an Israeli military news website, DEBKAfile, has cited military sources as saying that a Chinese aircraft carrier, the Liaoning-CV-16, has already been spotted at the Syrian port of Tartus on the Mediterranean coast. It was said to be accompanied by a guided missile cruiser.

The news comes after Russia, Iran, Iraq and Syria agreed to establish a joint information center in Baghdad to coordinate their operations against Islamic State militants, according to sources.

Obama Sees Russia Failing in Syria Effort

WASHINGTON — The already fragmented battlefield in Syria grew even more complicated on Friday, as Russia and Iran expanded their military efforts to defend the beleaguered Syrian government in defiance of President Obama, who predicted that their actions would lead only to a “quagmire.”

In his first comments since Russia began airstrikes on Syrian targets this week, Mr. Obama said that Moscow was acting “not out of strength but out of weakness.” Bristling at criticism of his own Syria policy, he rejected domestic opponents who offer “half-baked ideas” that amount to “a bunch of mumbo-jumbo.”

“An attempt by Russia and Iran to prop up Assad and try to pacify the population is just going to get them stuck in a quagmire and it won’t work,” Mr. Obama said during a news conference at the White House on Friday, referring to President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, a longtime ally of both Russia and Iran. “And they will be there for a while if they don’t take a different course.”

Neither Russia nor Iran showed signs of listening. While Moscow widened its airstrikes to hit Islamic State territory for the first time, Russian troops have unloaded a major long-range artillery system to add more firepower to its deployment in Syria, according to an American official. At the same time, American officials said Iran had sent additional ground troops to bolster Mr. Assad’s government.

LOL at Obama being so delusional.

Obama, the CIA, the rebels, and ISIS will all bow to Putin!

Trump: Middle East more stable with Saddam and Gadhafi

Post by class316 » October 5th, 2015, 4:55 pm

Wow, SOMEBODY understands!
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, when asked if he believes the Middle East would be better today if Moammar Gadhafi of Libya and Saddam Hussein of Iraq were still in power, responded, "It's not even a contest."

He related the situations in both of those countries with what is currently happening in Syria and seemed to endorse a stronger President Bashar Assad, even while admitting that he is "probably a bad guy."

"You can make the case, if you look at Libya, look at what we did there — it's a mess — if you look at Saddam Hussein with Iraq, look what we did there — it's a mess — it's [Syria] going to be same thing," the real estate mogul said.

The US is powerless against mother Russia
The Obama administration may be right that Russia's decision to intervene militarily in Syria will backfire against Vladimir Putin. But for now the audacious Russian president has succeeded in altering events in that country's civil war to his advantage, reestablishing Russia as a regional power and, probably not least from his perspective, embarrassing the United States.
That isn't all. The administration's halting and halfhearted efforts to build up “moderate” fighters in Syria to take on Islamic State have made it easy for Putin to argue that the superior strategy for suppressing that group is to shore up Assad. Never mind that Assad's brutal suppression of peaceful protests helped energize Islamic State and other extremists and contributed to a hemorrhage of refugees.

ref: ISIS urges followers to launch 'holy war' against Russia in revenge for bombing raids over Syria
Islamic State has reportedly called on its followers to launch a "holy war" against Russians and Americans over their 'crusader's war' in the Middle East.

An audio message has been distributed by supporters of the extremist group - according to the Reuters news agency.

The message, delivered by Islamic State spokesman Abu Mohammad al-Adnani, said: "Islamic youth everywhere, ignite jihad against the Russians and the Americans in their crusaders' war against Muslims."

Russia ‘deliberately targeting’ US-backed forces in Syria
Moscow is "deliberately targeting" U.S.-backed forces in Syria as part of a military campaign that has killed up to 150 U.S.-trained rebels, a U.S. official told Fox News.

The claim comes as the U.S. and Russian militaries try to reach an agreement about flight safety in the skies over Syria. Officials from both countries are holding their third videoconference on the issue Wednesday, as U.S.-led coalition and Russian aircraft look to avoid collisions as they launch airstrikes into Syria.

But even as they try to "de-conflict," evidence is mounting that Russia's air campaign is targeting more than just the Islamic State.

"Putin is deliberately targeting our forces," a U.S. official, who is disappointed in the U.S. response to Russia, told Fox News.

Putin Says Obama Has 'Mush For Brains'
Russian President Vladimir Putin isn’t one to hold back. Speaking Tuesday about the lack of cooperation and intelligence-sharing in Syria, Putin said some governments have “mush for brains,” apparently referring to the U.S., AFP reported.

"I think some of our partners simply have mush for brains. They do not have a clear understanding of what really happens in the country and what goals they are seeking to achieve," Putin said while speaking at an investment forum in Moscow.

Bashar Assad Goes to Moscow to Say Thanks to Vladimir Putin

Image
Assad thanked Putin for his military support, according to a transcript of their meeting published on the Kremlin website.

"I would like to express enormous gratitude to the whole leadership of the Russian Federation and to the Russian people for the help they are giving Syria," the transcript quoted Assad as saying. "Thank you for standing up for the unity of Syria, and its independence. Those political steps that have been taken by the Russian Federation since the start of the crisis have not allowed events in Syria to develop following a tragic scenario."

Putin thanked Assad for "accepting our invitation and coming to Moscow despite a tragic situation in your country."

Thank you Putin for not letting Assad go the way of Saddam. And Assad gets a bad ass photo op with Putin to boot!

How ironic that the USSR was the destroyer of worlds and nations, and now Russia is the savior of the world!

Pentagon's failed Syria program cost $2 million per trainee
WASHINGTON — When the Pentagon pulled the plug last month on its plan to train and field a force of moderate Syrians to combat the Islamic State, it had spent $384 million, or $2 million per fighter, for a program that produced dismal results, according to interviews and spending figures obtained by USA TODAY.

The Pentagon had tabbed $500 million in 2015 for the effort and promised to graduate 3,000 trained and equipped New Syrian Forces fighters this year, and 5,000 annually thereafter to combat the Islamic State, also known as ISIL.

The program was suspended after $384 million had been spent. Of the 180 Syrians vetted, trained and equipped, 145 fighters remain in the program. Of those, 95 are in Syria today. Two of the four training camps the Pentagon designated for the program in the Middle East never hosted a recruit.

The Pentagon disputes the $2 million figure per trainee, saying the actual cost is far lower, $30,000 per trainee. The "vast majority" of the funds paid for weapons, equipment and ammunition, some of which the U.S.-led coalition still has in storage, Navy Cdr. Elissa Smith, a spokeswoman, said in an email. In addition, some of those trained fighters have been calling in air strikes, and ammunition designated for the trainees has been given instead to other forces fighting ISIL, Smith said.

wow, Americans are homeless or losing their homes, social security won't exist when we're older, yet they spend $2 million on one Syrian :smh:
