Pontiac Silverdome to be demolished

Apparently, permits have been filed to begin the final demolition of the Silverdome, which obviously hosted one of the most legendary shows in the history of wrestling, WrestleMania III. It hadn't been in use for several years, and in the subsequent time, the new owners stopped inflating the roof and the fabric was largely destroyed in a snowstorm, making renovations and reopening pretty much impossible.

I was fortunate enough to visit Detroit back in 2006 to see a Monster Jam event at the Silverdome. It wasn't the final event, but likely one of the last "major" public events when the facility was still operating full-time. As a wrestling fan, it was pretty epic to walk the floor where Hogan slammed Andre, Steamboat pinned Savage, etc. Glad I was able to pull that trip off, since if I hadn't went then, I likely would never have been inside the venue. I remember going back the year WrestleMania 23 was in Detroit (at Ford Field), and I drove up to the parking lot, but by then the facility was pretty much barricaded off. They even had security on golf carts driving around - when they saw I was just taking pictures, they just waved and drove off, but obviously jumping the fence and walking around would not have been permitted by that point.

RIP Silverdome

Nice shots AJ. It's final claim to fame will be as part of a shitty Bayformers movie.

It's really a shame that it was left to rot like that. I saw this video on youtube about a couple of guys who sneaked on recently (January) and filmed what the Silverdome looks like now. I'm not usually that type of guy, but if I had never been inside, I probably would have flown out to Detroit and done a sneak-tour myself before it gets tore down. But I would have skipped the part where they went up to the roof on the catwalk - climbing on an abandoned catwalk that hasn't been maintained in a decade and has been out in the elements for years? Screw that!

They had a good SB in there, WM III as you mentioned, and a lot of shitty Lions games. Barry Sanders, the most exciting player IMO the NFL has ever had, played there. To me the greater loss was the sorry demolition of Tiger Stadium.

I had to go check it out when I went to Detroit for a Packers game. Unfortunately it was a Thursday during the day and they have offices very close by so security was out and about so I couldn't get inside or anything but it was still cool to see the building up close and the history around it. Damn shame the condition it has been left in.
