On Sal Corrente's facebook from earlier this month or late November there is an AMAZING photo taken in New York where a fan is standing next to Rocky Johnson, Afa and a 13 year old Dwayne Johnson. The fan is between Rocky and Afa and Rocky to the left of Afa. I don't believe the guy who did the photography, a relative, did not get a photo but he was the one who shared the memory on the facebook page.

I also can't believe it. The photo background and overall imagery looks like 1980s but I figured it was maybe done in the early 1990s.

Some new stuff I acquired to my personal collection.

First is a postcard WWF sent out to fans who wrote fan mail to Hulk Hogan. This card sells for $60-$100, but as someone who literally scours every corner of the internet to find obscure autographs, I was able to find this along with a signed magazine by the Hulkster from the same guy, and I talked him down to $60 for the lot with local pickup.

Another obscure find is this WWF program with match card, that was signed by Bossman, Hogan and Slaughter. I got a pretty good deal I think on this piece, and the seller even had photos he took of/with the guys signing. A very cool glimpse into old school combo hunting, and my first Bossman auto in my collection.

Great photos those little whippersnappers got!

BTW I would LOVE to find some old pics of any Hulk Hogan impersonators! My cousin had one at his birthday party 30+ years ago. I lost the "signed postcard" he gave out.

Was the impersonator good, was he popular with the kids or did he fall flat like the Ghostbusters 2 party?

Many years ago at a buffet autograph signing for WCW there were two wrestlers scheduled to sign. When my father called the restaurant they said it was "Alex Wright and a Hulk Hogan impersonator." I was pretty disappointed. I liked Alex but didn't like the idea of an impersonator. As a fan of lower card guys, I marked out big when I saw it was actually Dave Sullivan who had been doing the Hulk fan gimmick at the time.

My cousin was younger than me and enjoyed it. I was probably 10 or 11 and figured he was a fake. I recall he held the kids upside down and took a Polaroid and signed that.

Found a couple pics from Pat Morita's lone convention appearance. He appeared at the London Film and Comic Con in March 2004.

My grandfather died two weeks ago and we went to a LOT of autograph shows together but in the early 1990s he was an HR manager for a major company and wound up meeting some local celebrities. Here he is with Baltimore Colts Johnny Unitas and two co workers (he is the one holding the photo with Johnny). He was an amazing man with a large "zest" for life.

Was sorting through some stuff in my house, and I stumbled upon a book of old polaroids and hard-copy pictures, obviously before the days where digital photos took over. Brought back a lot of good memories - found a polaroid with Abdullah the Butcher from and indy wrestling show in around 2002ish that I THINK might have been my first celebrity photo op ever. Also found polaroids from the same time period with 80's legends like Funk, Hansen, Steamboat, Honky Tonk, Snuka, and Valentine.

In the hard-copy area, I found a table pic of me and Stone Cold from the Bookends signing when he was promoting his book in the fall of 2003 - and he's XFL jersey suited, lol. I also came across a hard-copy picture with Dawn Wells from 2009 - she had a setup where her handler had a digital camera hooked up to a desktop printer and printed out copies right then and there, which looking back was pretty advanced for 2009.

And what is probably my favorite gem from this find was the pic from my first convention photo op - Roddy Piper from Chiller in April of 2004. At the time, I was had just gotten my first decent-paying job the year before, and was starting to stick my toe in the water of pop-culture collecting. I had been to baseball card shows, wrestling shows that had old-timer meet & greet events in conjunction with the show, and indy wrestling shows where guys on the card signed at took pics at intermission, but I had no idea that mainstream pop-culture conventions were even a thing at that point. I was looking for some Piper autographs, and I was googling his name to see if he had some sort of website store where you could buy stuff off of. As luck would have it, I stumbled across his name up on the Chiller Theatre website, and he would be appearing there the following week - 15 minutes from my house!

This was at the old Secaucus venue, so they had the big tent set up off to the side of the main building. I had never been there before, or to any con for that matter, so when I saw the long line going into the tent, with multiple people wearing Hot Rod shirts, I figured that was the line to get on to buy tickets. Went through the line (expecting to see a ticket table at some point), walked into the tent, and by some miracle, the guy at the door never asked to see my wristband. So I (unintentionally) "mooched" my way into my first con, lol. Made my way around, and saw my all-time favorite wrestler himself standing at a table. I would have been thrilled with just an autographed 8x10 through the mail, but getting to actually take a picture WITH Roddy blew my mind at the time. Still an all-time favorite con experience.

Re: Leonard Nimoy Two Guys New Jersey appearances 1976

Post by Greg2600 »

AJ, I think you've posted the Butcher photo before, but not the rest, and love the Chiller/Piper story! Honestly you reminded me of a bunch of updates I wanted to make to this thread!

Several years ago, you in fact posted an old ad for a Leonard Nimoy appearance (LINK) in the 1970's in NJ. Well, I went and found quite a bit of evidence of that! In fact, some eBay keeps listing Xerox copies of a Nimoy handout they must have used. This was a Two Guys, a well known area dept/furniture store, and held on August 21, 1976. Newspaper article featuring a couple kids from my hometown visited with him. I was not born yet!

I also found a guy who posted a pic of his then girlfriend meeting Nimoy at another store in Hackensack, where Billy Joel did not need a house, and getting the Polaroid signed!

Re: 1977 Toronto Star Wars Cast "Autograph Party"

Post by Greg2600 »

Here's another that I've had sitting around and will finally post! Years ago, (LINK) Class found some kind of Star Wars cast book signing or whatever featuring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford. I did some research earlier this year, and discovered this was some type of promo event in Toronto, Canada, on June 16, 1977 (presume). A flyer lists it as "Autograph Party," at BAKKA II, 834 Yonge Street, Toronto. I think the building is long gone. They claimed 300 people jammed through the small shop. Talk about one in a lifetime....

Man that AJ Le/Piper story is incredible. How often do people get that lucky? You want a signed 8x10, you then find out Piper himself will be 15 minutes from your house and you get a full combo!

I can't even imagine what a holy grail a 1977 group photo op with Mark, Carrie and Harrison would be.
